An Exhibit of the Color Photography of Tom Judd |
The digital computer offers tools that go well beyond the usual controls of camera and darkroom. To the traditional camera options of perspective, exposure and focus, the computer adds control of tonal value, color, geometric distortion, sharpness and blur.
The skilled photographer employs all of these controls in harmony to manage presentation, mood and emphasis while creating images that reflect a personal vision. Striving toward overall control of personal vision is what elevates the artistic photograph above the snapshot.
As an electrical engineer, I sought to minimize the complexity of the electronic hardware and graphical user interface software that I designed. This methodology has carried over to the visual design of my personal photographs. I strive for simple and clear compositions that capture the essence of the subject. A deliberate minimalization of visual elements creates a representation that tends toward abstraction. Color is an important element in my images, whether in the rich and vibrant hues of the architecture of the Southwest, or in the muted tones of a foggy New England harbor.
